Year 5
Welcome to Year 5
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome both you and your child to Year 5. The teachers this year in Year 5 are Mr Haines and Miss Ormiston. Supporting the Year 5 teachers are Mrs Cullen and Mrs Scamp. We are looking forward to an exciting and successful year.
Topics for the Term
Please see the attached sheet for a summary curriculum topic map of what will be covered over the next two terms.
Maths
We continue to encourage children to access Times Tables Rock Stars on a weekly basis to help develop their timetable knowledge and to take on battles set by us in school.
Reading
We would like to repeat that the most important activity you can do with your child is listening to them read and sharing books with them, modelling this skill. Encourage your child to talk in detail about the sequence of a story; i.e. what happened at the beginning, middle and end and using familiar story language. We ask you to please make a comment in their reading record book when you hear them read. We recommend that children read at least 3 times a week. Lots of parents have commented on how useful the phonic section in the Reading Record book is and are using it to support their child’s reading.
You can also access Accelerated Reader from home, so please continue to do your quizzes. Please let us know if you need your child’s login details.
Here is the Davington link for you to use when accessing A.R.:

Homework
The homework will consist of a list of 10 weekly spellings to be learnt for a test on Friday and a weekly task of maths questions linked to what they have learnt or what they are going to be learning. Finally, there will be optional tasks connected to the topic the children are currently learning.
PE
If your child is in school, please ensure their PE kit is in school at all times.
Our PE days are Monday and Friday (5H) and Mondays and Wednesdays (5M).
Please ensure children with shoulder-length hair or longer have their hair tied back. If your child has pierced ears, their earrings will need to be removed in these sessions. If they cannot remove their earrings, please provide tape.
Please ensure all coats, school clothes and plimsolls are clearly labelled with their name.
Trips/Experience Days
We are looking forward to organising experiences and activities for the children to take part in, whether they are in school or at home, so please keep an eye out for more information on this.
Water
It is important that children drink plenty of water throughout the day. In order to do this, children need a named water bottle that they can use during the day. Please make sure this does not leak and has a ‘sports top’ lid. These can be bought in the school office. The children are strongly encouraged to drink water, not squash.
Break Time Snacks
Should your child like a breaktime snack, please could you provide a healthy snack for them?
Collecting your child
At the end of the school day, your child will be taken to the playground. The children are instructed to remain with school staff until they see the adult responsible for collecting them. If your child is being collected by a different adult or walking home by themselves, please let the office know. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.
We hope the above information will enable you to support your child’s learning. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to come and see us.
