Year 3
Welcome to Year 3
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome both you and your child to Year three. The teachers this year in Year three are Miss Reynolds and Mr English. Supporting the year three teachers are Mrs Polden, Miss Wickham and Mrs Alexander. We are looking forward to an exciting and successful year.
School uniform
We are very proud of the whole school appearance and hope that you will always ensure that your child arrives at school appropriately dressed in full school uniform. Please ensure that every item of clothing, footwear and equipment is clearly marked with the child’s name.
Our school uniform is as follows:
Blue School Jumper/Cardigan (with school logo)
Charcoal Grey/Black Trousers
Charcoal Grey/Black Skirt
White Polo Shirt (with or without school logo)
Black Shoes (heels no higher than 2.5cm/1”)
Plain Black Trainers with no logos may be worn
Winter Only – Boots may be worn to and from school, but school shoes must be brought to school to change into
Please note: Trainers are only to be worn for PE lessons and are NOT to be worn for both PE and as general school shoes on Health and Safety grounds.
Homework
Our homework and spellings will continue to be sent home on a Wednesday and returned on a Monday, which is when we will also have our Spelling Test.
The children are also expected to do the following:
Maths
To work on securing the 2, 5 and 10 times tables as well as increasing fluency in 3, 4 and 8 times tables. The children have been provided with their TT Rockstar usernames and passwords so that they can access the website at home. This could be used alongside ‘Hit the Button’ to practise their timetables at home - www.ttrockstars.com
Reading
The most important activity you can do with your child is listening to them read and sharing books with them, modelling good reading skills. Encourage your child to talk in detail about the sequence and events in the book.
Inference is also a key skill that we focus on in Year 3. Please ask your children questions with answers that are not always obvious from the text, e.g.-How do you know what the weather is like? It is wet because he is wearing a raincoat.
The children need to bring their reading book and reading record to school every day. They should be reading at home, at least three times per week for around 10 minutes, but daily is even better! Please make sure that you record when you have heard your child read in their reading record book so that they can get their Reading Rewards.
You can also access Accelerated Reader from home, so please continue to do your quizzes. Please let us know if you need your child’s login details.

PE
Each week, your child will continue to have an outdoor Games lesson (unless the weather is very bad) as well as a PE/hall session.
These sessions will be as follows:
- Indoor Games - Monday morning
- Outdoor Games - Wednesday (3R) /Thursday (3E) afternoon
- Please ensure your child’s PE kit is in a suitable bag and labelled clearly with their full name and class.
Please remember that our school games kit is our Davington blue shorts and top for indoor PE and long blue/black joggers and a warm top for outdoor Games. Your child will also need a pair of trainers for outside games sessions. Please ensure children with shoulder-length hair or longer have their hair tied back. If your child has pierced ears, their earrings will need to be removed in these sessions.
Please ensure all coats, school clothes including PE kit, wellies and plimsolls are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Water
It is important that children drink plenty of water throughout the day. In order to do this, children need a named water bottle that they can use during the day. Please make sure this does not leak and has a ‘sports top’ lid. These can be bought in the school office.
The children are strongly encouraged to drink water, not squash.
Trips/Experience Days
We are looking forward to setting a date for our next Year 3 experience, which will be an ‘Egyptian Day’. The children can wear and Egyptian costume for this. More details will be released, nearer the time. We will also soon be setting dates for possible trips. If you would like to volunteer to join us, we will have limited availability, but please let us know once dates have been set.
Break Time Snacks
By playtime, your child will be hungry. Should they like a healthy break time snack, please could this be provided for them in their bag. They will need to remember to remove any snacks from their lunch boxes as these are locked away until lunchtime.
Please ensure any pots (and lids) are named.
If you would like your child to have milk, please go onto the Coolmilk website to register.

Library time
All children have timetabled access to our wonderful library each week. They need to bring their library books back to school on our allotted day as we cannot guarantee that they can be changed at other times.
Collecting your child
At the end of the school day, your child will be taken to the main playground. The children are instructed to remain with school staff until they see the adult responsible for collecting them.
If there are any changes as to who will be collecting your child, please let a member of staff know or call / e-mail the office. Your child’s safety is paramount to us. As such, we very much appreciate your co-operation in this, to avoid embarrassment and delay when dismissing the children.
